Can someone else buy my domain if I forget to renew?
Yes. If you don’t renew your .ga.nu domain, it will eventually be released and can be registered by someone else. GA.NU provides a grace and redemption window so you can recover it before that happens.

Can someone else buy my domain if I forget to renew?

Short answer: yes—if you don’t renew your .ga.nu domain, it can become available for registration by other customers after it passes through the standard expiration lifecycle. GA.NU provides a grace period and a redemption period to help you recover a lapsed domain before it’s released.

The .ga.nu expiration lifecycle at GA.NU

Here’s what typically happens when a .ga.nu domain reaches its expiration date:

    1. Expiration (Day 0)

      • The domain’s paid term ends. Your website and email may stop working shortly after expiration.
      • The domain may be placed on hold and could resolve to a temporary parking page.
    2. Grace Period (Days 1–30)

      • You can renew the domain at the standard renewal price.
      • No redemption fee applies during this window.
      • DNS services may be limited; expect service disruption until renewal is completed.
    3. Redemption Period (Days 31–60)

      • The domain is no longer in standard renewal status, but you can still recover it.
      • A one-time redemption fee applies in addition to the renewal fee.
      • The domain is not publicly available to others yet, but it cannot be transferred.
    4. Pending Release (Days 61–65)

      • The domain is scheduled for release back to the available pool.
    5. Available to Others (Day 66+)

      • If you have not renewed or redeemed the domain, it is released and can be registered by someone else.

    Notes:

    • Timelines above are typical for GA.NU and may be adjusted based on operational or registry requirements. Always check your GA.NU account for the current status and deadlines.
    • Fees (including redemption fees) are listed in your GA.NU account’s billing section and may vary over time.

Practical example: What a missed renewal looks like

Imagine your domain, brand.ga.nu, expires on May 15.

    • May 15: Expiration. Website and email may go offline.
    • May 16–June 14: Grace period. You can renew at the normal price.
    • June 15–July 14: Redemption period. You can still recover it, but a redemption fee applies.
    • July 15–July 19: Pending release.
    • July 20 onward: The domain can be registered by someone else.

If you log in on June 10, you’ll see an option to Renew at the standard price. If you wait until June 20, you’ll see Redeem + Renew with an additional redemption fee.

What happens to your services when a domain expires?

    • Website and APIs: May stop resolving or show a parking page.
    • Email: Messages may bounce due to invalid MX records or domain hold status.
    • Certificates: TLS/SSL renewals can fail if the domain is on hold or not resolving.
    • DNS: GA.NU may place the domain on clientHold or switch to parking nameservers; custom DNS may not function until renewal.

How to prevent losing your domain

    • Enable Auto-Renew

      • Turn on auto-renew in your GA.NU account. We attempt renewal ahead of expiration (and again on the expiration date if needed).
      • Keep a valid default payment method on file.
    • Renew for Multiple Years

      • Reduce risk by renewing for up to 5 years (subject to availability). This minimizes annual reminders and payment failures.
    • Keep Contacts and Billing Up to Date

      • Ensure your administrative email address is current.
      • Update expired cards or billing details promptly.
    • Watch for Renewal Reminders

      • GA.NU emails renewal notices before and after expiration. Add GA.NU to your safe-senders list and consider calendar reminders.
    • Set Alerts

      • Use account notifications or integrate with your internal ops tooling to create renewal alerts for critical domains.

If your domain is already in redemption

    • Log into your GA.NU account and look for the Redeem option on the domain.
    • If you don’t see it, contact GA.NU Support; we can confirm eligibility and fees.
    • Once redeemed and renewed, your domain is restored. DNS and services can be re-enabled.

    Frequently asked questions

    • Can I transfer my expired domain to another registrar or service?

      • Transfers are generally blocked when a domain is expired or in redemption. Renew or redeem first, then initiate a transfer.
    • Will my site stay online during the grace period?

      • Not guaranteed. Many services stop shortly after expiration. Renew promptly to avoid downtime.
    • Can GA.NU "hold" my domain beyond the redemption period?

      • No. To keep a domain, you must renew or redeem within the lifecycle windows.
    • Do you notify me before expiration?

      • Yes, GA.NU sends multiple reminders to the administrative contact. Ensure your email is current and monitored.

    • Enable auto-renew
    • Verify billing info and backup payment method
    • Set calendar and account alerts 30+ days before expiration
